Empowerment of women to Prevent and Respond to Gender Bases Violence through Sports

Society for women's Education and Awareness development (SWEAD)

Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India

Many studies show that women in INDIA as a group are more likely to get HIV. The most recent studies show that 3% of the population as a whole is HIV infected while the percentage of HIV among women is higher at 3.6%. The link between HIV and rape is clearly illustrated by the percentage of women who contacted HIV through rape in 1994 genocide. The police records for 2011 also show high rates of Gender based Violence including 321 cases of physical assault, 403 rape cases for women over 18 years of age and 2033 rape cases for children under 18 years. “The violence that women suffer during conflict does not solely arise out of the conditions of caste discrimination depending in economical ; it is directly related to the violence that exists in women’s lives during peace times”.The Tamilnadu in particular is known for negative cultural practices including forced early marriages for the girl child, which constitutes rape crime. The early marriages for girls also imply that many girls do not go to school as they are prepared for marriage. This has implication on their economic security even as adult women and lack of awareness on their legal rights. There is also a gender gap in sports participation as women in India culture were not oriented towards sports and or other activities outside the domestic environment.Sports however has proved to build individual self esteem, confidence, keep people physically and psychologically fit and it also has a strong convening power and these are opportunities that Society for women's Education and Awareness development (SWEAD) in sports would like to exploit in building women’s capacity to prevent and respond to Gender Based Violence. The project will take an integrated approach using sports as a social development tool using it as a mobilizing platform and also equipping women with skills in different sports for self confidence, tolerance and realization of women power to challenge the traditional attitudes on limitation of what the girl child and woman are capable and not capable of doing. The main target group are the women (Age group 22 to 35)who are members of Women self help groups committees and associations with programs for the promotion of women’s rights. The project shall be implemented in a period of eight months. We expect the following results from this project, namely: • Increased women’s awareness on their legal rights. • Women take a more active role in preventing and responding to sexual and gender based violence.• A team of sports trainers established in different fields.• Women have more positive image and self worth and ready to protect their rights.• Women are more informed of Gender Based Violence service providers and ready to report GBV cases and seek other support services.• Formation of grassroots community based GBV action groups established.

Development of Sport dans la Ville's Campus

Sport dans la Ville

Lyon, France

In 2007, Sport dans la Ville launched its CAMPUS site in Lyon(the first training centre for training and professional insertion through sport). With 4 sports fields and a hosting building for the permanent teams and educators of the association, the CAMPUS is an outstanding complex serving sport and education for the 2.800 young members of the association. To ensure the qualitative and quantitative development of its professional integration programs, “Sport dans la Ville” is to launch the construction of a new space, with four new sports grounds, cloakrooms, an athletics track and a specific area dedicated to the “L dans la Ville” program (90 m²)for girls. The construction of this building, dedicated to employability actions of “Sport dans la Ville”, is a flagship project for the association. The new “Sport dans la Ville” campus will become the first place in France dedicated to receive 4.000 young people coached by the association for their employability. The $25k grant would be used to finance the construction of the space dedicated to the girls' activity in oder to develop their capacity for expression and their self-confidence. The public administration of Lyon and the Rhone-Alpes area, the French sports ministry will finance a large share of the project (60%).Further sponsors (private foundations) are procured to allow this great project to be launched.

Ram Light Up The Night Capital Campaign

Ram Capital Campaign

Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania, United States

The funding request would help to provide the community with a lighted multipurpose facility to be utilized for sporting, cultural and social events. It is not our goal to create top-of-the-line facilities with regard to design and cost. We seek simply to provide our students and community with the same level of facilities found in other area Districts. The end result - a safer, newer, and more practical athletic complex that can accommodate larger crowds, handicapped spectators and provide greater use for all athletics and community needs. While we recognize that many school districts are in precarious positions due to budgeting and lack of funding, our district is somewhat unique from the other districts because our large amount of farmland is often assessed lower at the Clean and Green value and our lack of business and industrial companies cripples our tax based funding. The vision to renovate and light the athletic facilities at our school is neither new nor fleeting. Our capital campaign is an aggressive, ambitious goal, but it is the commitment of the organization to create a perfect opportunity to secure funding without increasing school taxes and to create partnerships with individuals, corporations, and other organizations willing to support the community. At the heart of the funding is the installation of a lighting system to allow evening games and expanded field and track use for student athletics, recreation teams and the community. The majority of our neighborhoods do not have sidewalks or other safe locations for walkers or joggers. Everyone in the community can take advantage of the expanded hours the facility can be used. In addition, the facility and hours will contribute to the overall wellness in our community and provide a venue for events such as CROP walks, outdoor concerts and Relay for Life fundraisers.
